WhatsApp Business API Pricing India Jan 2026 Update The New Rules & Smart Cost-Cutting Tricks
WhatsApp Business API
Pricing in India for January 2026 follows the shift to per-message billing (since July 2025) with tiered rates, varying by message category (Marketing, Utility, Authentication) and volume, generally costing around ₹0.89 for Marketing and ₹0.12-₹0.15 for Utility/Auth, with volume discounts lowering rates, plus free entry points from ads and BSP fees for tools/support. Expect costs based on who starts the conversation and the message type, with lower rates for high-volume users.
Key Pricing Changes (Effective July 2025 & Ongoing in 2026)
- Per-Message Billing: The old conversation-based model is gone; you pay per message delivered.
- Message Categories: Costs differ for Marketing, Utility, Authentication, and Service messages.
- Volume Tiers: Higher volume unlocks lower per-message rates for Utility & Authentication messages.
- Free Entry Points: Ads (Click-to-WhatsApp) & Page CTAs offer a 72-hour free messaging window for all categories.
India-Specific Rates
- Marketing: Around ₹0.8855 per message.
- Utility/Service: Around ₹0.1265 per message (free if user-initiated within 24hrs, or for business replies to user).
- Authentication: Around ₹0.1320–₹0.1550 per message.
How it Works
- Initiation: User starts = Free (Service) or User-Initiated (Service/Utility/Auth).
- Business Initiates: You send a template (Marketing, Utility, Auth) = Charged.
- Categories: Marketing (promos), Utility (alerts, confirmations), Auth (OTPs), Service (support).
How WhatsApp Business API Pricing Works in India
WhatsApp follows a conversation-based pricing model, designed to make costs predictable and fair. A single 24-hour conversation window starts when either the user or the business sends the first message. Here’s how it works:
1. User-Initiated Conversations
When a customer reaches out first — say for a support query or product inquiry — it starts a user-initiated conversation. The business can reply within the 24-hour window without any extra charge for that session.
2. Business-Initiated Conversations
When a company sends the first message, such as for marketing campaigns, reminders, or confirmations, it’s counted as a business-initiated conversation. These are typically priced slightly higher as they involve proactive outreach.
3. Category-Based Pricing
WhatsApp classifies business messages into four categories — Utility, Authentication, Marketing, and Service. Each category has a different rate depending on its purpose and level of engagement.
